Marine Generator and Auxiliary Engine Parts: Cummins, Onan, Perkins and MWM Components in the Sea Keepers Approved Catalogue

How to specify spare parts for marine generators and auxiliary engines, using the approved Cummins QSX15 crankcase breather, Onan MDKBH gearcase and connecting-rod parts, Perkins 4000 Series cam follower and camshaft bush, the MWM TBD620 axial adjustment ring and two unbranded bush references.

Back to News

Eight of the newly approved Sea Keepers engine records belong to generator and auxiliary engines rather than main propulsion: crankcase breather 3102665 for the Cummins QSX15 (SK-00010-AV), gearcase ball 181-9023 (SK-00004) and standard connecting-rod bushing 185-5571 / A046X327 (SK-00015) for Cummins Onan generator engines, cam follower SE8M (SK-00016) and camshaft bush CH11228 (SK-00019-AV) for Perkins engines, axial adjustment ring 7620.340.145.4 (SK-00003) recorded against an MWM TBD620V12 marine diesel, and two bush references, 418772-02/FR-26001001100 (SK-00012-AV) and FR-26001001100 (SK-00014), that carry no maker name. Generators run more hours than almost anything else on board, so their parts deserve the same discipline as main-engine spares.

Why auxiliary engines wear differently

A ship's generators run around the clock in port and at sea, often at steady load, while a harbour craft's auxiliary may idle for long periods and then take sudden load. Running hours accumulate faster than on the main engine, service intervals arrive sooner, and crankcase ventilation, valve-train and bearing-surface parts show the effect first. Keep an hours log for each generator and plan parts by hours, not by the calendar.

Cummins QSX15 crankcase breather 3102665 (SK-00010-AV)

The approved record describes an OEM Cummins crankcase breather assembly for QSX15 CM570 engines: a metal housing with filtration media, a ventilation port, a filter element and mounting holes. The breather separates oil mist from blow-by gas and keeps crankcase pressure under control. A blocked element pushes oil past seals and raises consumption; a missing or wrong one lets oil mist into the engine room. Order the breather with its replacement element, hoses, gaskets and drain fittings, state the engine serial number and control-module version, and confirm whether the installation vents to atmosphere or returns to the intake.

Onan MDKBH gearcase ball 181-9023 and connecting-rod bushing 185-5571 (SK-00004, SK-00015)

Cummins Onan marine generator sets are identified by model and a specification letter, and the approved record for ball 181-9023 states that it applies to the MDKBH gearcase from specification C onward. The spec letter is therefore part of the identity: a set built to an earlier letter may use a different part. The record names the 4MDKBH or 5MDKBH models as probable applications but asks for confirmation, so send the full model, spec letter and serial number from the generator nameplate. The standard connecting-rod bushing 185-5571 / A046X327 (SK-00015) supports the piston pin in specified Onan engines. It is supplied at standard size; confirm the rod bore, pin diameter and whether finish boring after fitting is part of the maker's procedure.

Perkins 4000 Series cam follower SE8M and camshaft bush CH11228 (SK-00016, SK-00019-AV)

Perkins 4000 Series engines power many standby and prime generator sets as well as marine auxiliaries. Perkins parts are selected by the engine's serial number and build list, and the same description can map to different parts across builds. The approved SE8M cam follower is a needle-bearing follower for specified 4000 Series engines; its roller runs on the cam lobe, so a failed follower is a reason to inspect the lobe and the oil supply before a new one is fitted. The CH11228 camshaft bush, recorded at roughly 9 by 9 by 3.5 cm, supports a camshaft journal. It is pressed into the block and must finish at the correct bore with its oil hole aligned, so the enquiry should state whether the workshop will line-bore after installation.

MWM TBD620V12 axial adjustment ring 7620.340.145.4 (SK-00003)

The adjustment ring is recorded under the MWM brand with MS Motorservice International GmbH as manufacturer, against a Shanghai-built TBD620V12 marine diesel. An axial adjustment ring sets the end clearance of a rotating assembly, so its thickness is a measured value rather than a stock description. Send the measured end float, the thickness of the ring currently fitted, the clearance specified in the manual and the engine serial number. The TBD620 family has been built in Germany and under licence in China, so the record's manufacturer and the engine's build plate must both be quoted.

Unbranded bush references FR-26001001100 and 418772-02 (SK-00012-AV, SK-00014)

Not every stores reference comes with a maker name. The two bush records share the FR-26001001100 reference, SK-00012-AV carries the additional 418772-02 number, and both are published with their function and specifications marked as unverified. Treat such references as internal stock codes until the equipment manual confirms them. Provide the engine or gearbox the bush came from, measure the inside and outside diameters, the length and any oil hole, and attach a photograph with a scale. Sea Keepers will match the reference to a maker part or quote a dimensionally equivalent bush with the uncertainty stated, rather than substituting silently.

Build a generator spares list by hours and by criticality

List the parts needed at each service interval (filters, elements, belts, gaskets) separately from the parts that stop the generator when they fail (breather, followers, bushes, bearings, injection parts). Carry the second group on board when the vessel's trading pattern makes port delivery slow. Where the vessel has an emergency generator required by class, keep its critical spares separate from the main generators' spares so they are not consumed during routine work.

What to send with a generator or auxiliary engine enquiry

Engine maker, model and serial number and, for Onan sets, the spec letter; generator set model and serial number; running hours; the part number from the parts list for that build; quantity per engine; required condition (new OEM, approved alternative or service exchange); delivery port and required-on-board date; and photographs of the nameplate and the removed part. The RFQ checklist linked below gives the complete format.

Sea Keepers approved auxiliary engine records

Each part below has an approved Sea Keepers product page with its recorded maker, part number, application and dimensions where published. Review the record, then send the engine identity and running-hours evidence so the part can be confirmed against the actual build before purchase.

For the business buyer

Confirm the intended vessel or facility, operating environment, quantity and required approval before requesting a quotation. Capacity, coverage and service interval should be matched to the risk rather than selected by headline price.

For technical experts

Verify the delivered model against the maker reference, rating, dimensions, materials, operating limits and certification scope. Record the serial or batch number and retain the manufacturer datasheet, declaration, test report and maintenance instructions in the vessel file.

Product comparison

Compare alternatives on certified performance, compatibility, installation requirements, inspection interval, spares availability and total life-cycle cost. A lower unit price is not a like-for-like comparison when approval documents or service support differ.
