Diesel Cylinder Head Replacement: Cat C7.1 450-9263, Cummins QSX15 Dual-Cam Head and Cat 124-1855 Head Bolts

How to identify, inspect and order a replacement cylinder head and head bolts for marine and generator diesels, using the Sea Keepers approved records SK-00045-AV (Cat C7.1 450-9263), SK-00046-AV (Cummins ISX15/QSX15/X15 dual cam) and SK-00048 (Cat 124-1855 / 6I-4025).

Back to News

A cylinder head is one of the heaviest and most expensive single parts in a diesel engine overhaul, and it is also one of the easiest to order wrongly. Three new records in the Sea Keepers approved catalogue cover this job: Caterpillar engine cylinder head 450-9263 for C7.1 engines (SK-00045-AV), the Cummins dual-cam cylinder head assembly 4962732 / 5658283 for ISX15, QSX15 and X15 engines (SK-00046-AV), and the Caterpillar 12-point cylinder head bolt 124-1855 with fastener group 6I-4025 (SK-00048). This guide explains what each record tells a buyer and what to check before a head is shipped to a vessel or generator site.

When a head has to be replaced rather than repaired

Many heads can be returned to service after valve and seat work, crack testing and a skim of the fire deck. Replacement becomes the practical choice when cracks run between valve seats or into water passages, when the deck has already been machined to its minimum height, when injector bores or valve guides are damaged beyond repair, or when an overheating event has distorted the casting. On a working vessel the time lost waiting for machine-shop repair can also cost more than the part, which is why owners often keep a replacement head on order for critical engines.

Caterpillar C7.1 engine cylinder head 450-9263

The approved record lists 450-9263 as a genuine Caterpillar engine cylinder head of about 82 kg (180.77 lb) for C7.1 engines. It closes the top of the cylinders and carries the valves, ports and injectors. It is used in cylinder head group 391-3193 for serial-number ranges D7A1-UP and E551-UP. Applications include C7.1 generator sets such as DE150E, DE200E, DE200E0 and XQP150, as well as machines like the 320D2 GC/L excavator, 140 GC grader and 527 track skidder. Related items listed with it are cylinder head gasket 359-6616 and exhaust valve 315-3394. No supersession was found in the sources reviewed.

Why the serial-number prefix matters on the C7.1

The group 391-3193 reference is tied to D7A1-UP and E551-UP serial ranges, so the engine serial number is the first thing to confirm. A C7.1 in a different serial range or a different rating can use a different head group. Read the engine plate, not the generator set or machine model alone, and send the full serial number with the enquiry. Order the head gasket and any valves at the same time; a new head fitted with an old gasket is a false economy.

Cummins ISX15, QSX15 and X15 dual-cam head 4962732 / 5658283

SK-00046-AV covers the Cummins cylinder head assembly for dual-cam 15-litre engines. It closes the top of all six cylinders and carries the valves, springs, guides, seats and the twin overhead camshafts. One supplier lists 5658283 as the head for EPA98 15-litre ISX and QSX engines, and another lists 5658283PX as interchangeable with 4962732, 4331387, 5413782, 3412277, 3680855, 3682836, 4026542, 4059225, 4101420 and 4926774. No Cummins supersession notice between 4962732 and 5658283 was found; suppliers treat them as cross-references.

Confirm the CPL and ESN on Cummins engines

Because so many numbers cross-reference to this head, the Cummins Control Parts List (CPL) and Engine Serial Number (ESN) are what decide the fit. The record mentions CPL and ESN prefixes including 2442, 2628 to 2630, 2732 to 2734, 2834, 2919, 3229, 3320 and 8046 to 8520. Read both numbers from the engine dataplate and include them in the request. Also confirm that the engine really is a dual-cam ISX or QSX: single-cam X15 and later engines use different heads.

Caterpillar 12-point cylinder head bolt 124-1855

The SK-00048 record pairs bolt 124-1855 with cylinder head fastener group 6I-4025. Supplier data gives a 3/4-16 UNF thread, 194 mm (7.638 in) overall length, 130.5 mm grip length and 19.05 mm head height, in grade 8 SAE 4129 bare steel, weighing about 0.47 kg each. In C18 cylinder head group 312-8590 both 6I-4025 (quantity 16) and 124-1855 are listed, and Cat bolt kit 557-4756 contains 124-1854 and 124-1855. Compatible engines listed are the 3406E, 3412, C13 genset, C15, C16, C18, C27 and C32. Note that these bolts belong to the larger Caterpillar engines, not the C7.1 above.

Do not reuse stretched head bolts

Head bolts are tightened into a controlled stretch, and many engine makers limit or forbid reuse. Measure bolt length against the service limit, check threads and the underside of the head for damage, and replace the full set where the manual requires it. Clean and chase the block threads, lubricate as specified and follow the tightening sequence and angle steps exactly. Mixed old and new bolts give uneven clamp load and are a common cause of gasket failure after an overhaul.

Fitting checklist

Before fitting any head, check the block deck for flatness and liner protrusion, clean every water and oil passage, and confirm that the gasket matches the head and block. Set valve lash, crosshead or bridge adjustment and injector settings to the manual, prime the fuel and lube systems and run the engine under observation. Re-check coolant level, leaks and exhaust temperatures across all cylinders during the first loaded run.

Send a complete enquiry

For a quotation, give the engine make and model, full serial number (and CPL for Cummins), the part number you have, the Sea Keepers code, quantity, whether you need the bare head, the head with valves fitted or a complete set with gasket and bolts, any new, remanufactured or used preference, and the delivery port. The approved product pages below show the catalogue details for each item.

For the business buyer

Confirm the intended vessel or facility, operating environment, quantity and required approval before requesting a quotation. Capacity, coverage and service interval should be matched to the risk rather than selected by headline price.

For technical experts

Verify the delivered model against the maker reference, rating, dimensions, materials, operating limits and certification scope. Record the serial or batch number and retain the manufacturer datasheet, declaration, test report and maintenance instructions in the vessel file.

Product comparison

Compare alternatives on certified performance, compatibility, installation requirements, inspection interval, spares availability and total life-cycle cost. A lower unit price is not a like-for-like comparison when approval documents or service support differ.
