The connecting rod links the piston to the crankshaft. Every combustion stroke pushes through it, and every exhaust stroke pulls on it, so a rod that is bent, stretched or wrongly matched can wreck an engine in seconds. Three connecting rods are now in the Sea Keepers approved catalogue, for the FPT (Iveco) Vector 8, the Cummins 6C 8.3 family and the Caterpillar C15 / C18. This guide explains what each record tells a buyer and how to avoid the usual ordering mistakes.
When a connecting rod has to be replaced
Rods are normally reused at overhaul after inspection, but they must be replaced after a spun bearing that has damaged the big-end bore, after hydraulic lock from water or fuel in a cylinder, after a piston seizure, or when measurement shows the rod is bent or twisted beyond the limit. A rod from an engine that has thrown a rod elsewhere should also be treated with suspicion, because the shock load reaches every cylinder. If one rod is replaced, check the weight against the others so the engine stays in balance.
FPT (Iveco) Vector 8 connecting rod assembly 504087778
SK-00023-AV is the genuine FPT connecting rod assembly 504087778, about 5.06 kg, for Vector 8 V8 diesels, including the V08 ENT M marine engine and the GE Vector 650E generator set. Eight are fitted per engine. Related parts in the same FPT catalogue group are connecting rod bolt 500359926 and the standard rod bearing set 8093826. One supplier lists 504024601 alongside 504087778, but the sources reviewed do not say which number supersedes which, so the engine serial number should decide.
Rod bolts and bearings on the Vector 8
Connecting rod bolts are stretch bolts on most modern diesels and are normally single-use. Order new bolts 500359926 with every rod, and a new bearing set in the correct size. The Vector 8 crankshaft 504022670 (SK-00032) is in the same engine list, so a rod failure that has marked the crankpin may mean the shaft has to be ground or replaced as well; see the crankshaft guide linked below.
Cummins 6C / 6CT / 6CTA 8.3 connecting rod 3901383 / 3924350
SK-00025-AV is the genuine Cummins connecting rod 3901383 / 3924350, about 3.15 kg, for 6C, 6CT and 6CTA 8.3 engines and related ISC / ISL engines, a common choice in workboats and generator sets. One rod is fitted per cylinder. Suppliers cross-reference 3901383 and 3924350 as interchangeable, along with 3901224, 3971394, 4947898, 5266243, 3934927, 3967348, 3969348, 3970852 and 3971817. No clear supersession direction was found.
Match the Cummins rod to the crankshaft
One supplier notes that this rod is for use only with crankshaft 3917320, not crankshaft 3965006. That is the key check on this engine: read the crankshaft number or the engine CPL and ESN before ordering, because a rod made for the other crankshaft will not suit the crankpin. Send the CPL with the enquiry so the right rod is matched.
Caterpillar C15 / C18 piston connecting rod 224-3245
SK-00026-AV is the genuine Caterpillar piston connecting rod 224-3245 for C15 and C18 engines, including C18 marine engines and C15 / C18 generator sets. Caterpillar says it includes the dowel pin and bearing. It suits 60 mm tapered wrist-pin (Monotherm piston) applications, with a 10.665 in (270.9 mm) centre-to-centre length. Related parts are connecting rod bearing 261-3450 and piston pin 524-5565, and the Cat Reman alternative is 10R-2117. No supersession was found.
Why the piston type matters on Caterpillar engines
C15 and C18 engines have been built with different piston designs. The 224-3245 rod suits the 60 mm tapered-pin Monotherm piston; a rod for a different pin size or an articulated piston will not fit. Confirm the piston part number and the engine serial number before ordering, and fit the new rod with the bearing and pin listed for it.
Inspection and fitting checklist
Measure the big-end and small-end bores for size and roundness, check the rod for bend and twist on a fixture, inspect the cap serrations or dowels for damage, and never swap caps between rods. Use new bolts where the manual says so, lubricate threads and faces as specified and tighten in the correct torque-and-angle steps. Check bearing clearance and side clearance on the crankpin, and turn the engine by hand before the first start.
Send a complete enquiry
For a quotation, give the engine make, model and full serial number (CPL and ESN for Cummins), the part number you hold, the Sea Keepers code, the quantity per engine, whether you also need bolts, bearings or pins, whether remanufactured rods are acceptable and the delivery port. The approved product pages below show the catalogue details for each rod.
For the business buyer
Confirm the intended vessel or facility, operating environment, quantity and required approval before requesting a quotation. Capacity, coverage and service interval should be matched to the risk rather than selected by headline price.
For technical experts
Verify the delivered model against the maker reference, rating, dimensions, materials, operating limits and certification scope. Record the serial or batch number and retain the manufacturer datasheet, declaration, test report and maintenance instructions in the vessel file.
Product comparison
Compare alternatives on certified performance, compatibility, installation requirements, inspection interval, spares availability and total life-cycle cost. A lower unit price is not a like-for-like comparison when approval documents or service support differ.
