Caterpillar C9.3 Basic Cylinder Head 497-5505: 1.6 Swirl Ratio, Bare Casting vs Head Group, and What to Order With It

What buyers need to know before ordering Caterpillar basic cylinder head 497-5505 for the C9 / C9.3 from the Sea Keepers approved record SK-00050: what a basic head includes, why the 1.6 swirl ratio matters, how it relates to head group 502-6507, and which seat inserts, camshaft and piston parts are in the same catalogue.

Back to News

The Caterpillar C9.3 powers marine propulsion and auxiliary engines, industrial units and SR4B generator sets, and it replaced the earlier C9 in many of those roles. When a C9.3 head is cracked between the valve seats, has a damaged fire deck after an overheat, or has seats and guides worn beyond repair, the usual fix is a new head. Caterpillar supplies it in two forms: the bare casting, and a built-up head group. The approved Sea Keepers record SK-00050 is the bare casting, part number 497-5505. This guide explains what that means for the order.

What SK-00050 is

SK-00050 is genuine Caterpillar engine cylinder head (basic) 497-5505 for C9 and C9.3 engines, with a 1.6 swirl ratio. The record gives a weight of 135.00 kg (297.62 lb). It is the head casting that closes the top of the cylinders and carries the ports, valve seats and injector bores. No supersession was found in the sources reviewed.

Basic head versus head group 502-6507

A basic head is the casting as supplied for building up. The record states that valves, springs and the other parts are added in cylinder head group 502-6507, which applies from serial number prefix CG91 and forms part of engine arrangements 462-6282 and 581-1242 to 581-1245. A buyer who orders only 497-5505 therefore receives a head that cannot be bolted on and run until it has been assembled. Either the workshop transfers the valve train from the old head and fits new parts where needed, or the complete group is ordered instead. Asking for the group number on the quotation avoids the most common mistake with this part: expecting a ready-to-fit head and receiving a bare casting.

Why the swirl ratio must match

Swirl ratio describes how strongly the intake port makes the incoming air rotate in the cylinder. It is set by the shape of the intake ports cast into the head, and it works together with the piston bowl and the injector spray pattern. A head with a different swirl ratio can give poorer combustion, more smoke and different emissions even though it bolts on. The 497-5505 record is specifically the 1.6 swirl ratio head, so the engine's arrangement number should confirm that 1.6 is correct before the head is accepted. Do not mix heads from different arrangements because they look the same.

Seat inserts and valve parts for the C9 / C9.3 head

The approved catalogue carries the C9 / C9.3 valve seat inserts that go into this family of heads. SK-00084 is intake valve seat insert 255-8666, 42.6 mm outside and 36.5 mm inside diameter, superseded by 564-8811. SK-00085 is exhaust seat insert 262-2959, 39.1 mm outside and 32.5 mm inside diameter, now discontinued and superseded by 564-8812. Both current numbers are listed twelve per head in C9.3 cylinder head assembly 491-1831. Because the record for 497-5505 names head group 502-6507, the engine serial number should be used to confirm which head assembly and which inserts apply to a particular engine. Intake and exhaust inserts are different sizes and are not interchangeable.

Other C9 parts that are worth checking at the same time

A head is often changed after an event that has also hurt other parts. If the engine overheated or dropped a valve, check the pistons: the C9 piston crown 385-1657 (SK-00040-AV) is in the catalogue for the 265-1400 piston and rod group with a 16.1:1 compression ratio. The camshaft assembly 242-0673 (SK-00018-AV) lists the C9 marine, industrial and generator-set engines among its applications, and a worn rocker arm button such as 258-8721 (SK-00009-AV) makes valve lash impossible to hold after the head is refitted. On the flywheel end, the 3176B / C9 flywheel assembly 132-3141 (SK-00061-AV) is also an approved record. Each of these needs the engine serial number to confirm fitment, because C9 and C9.3 parts are not always the same.

Fitting notes

Before a new head goes on, the block deck is cleaned and checked for flatness, and the liner protrusion is checked so the head gasket clamps evenly. A new head gasket is fitted, and head bolts are tightened in the sequence and stages given in the Caterpillar service manual; bolts that are past their reuse limit are renewed. If the head is being built up in the workshop, the valve seats are checked for correct width and the valves for recession before the springs go on. After installation, valve lash is set with the engine at the positions given in the manual, the injectors are fitted with new seals, and the cooling system is bled before the first run.

What to send with an enquiry

Send the engine model (C9 or C9.3), the engine serial number and arrangement number, the application (propulsion, auxiliary or generator), whether a bare head 497-5505 or the complete head group is needed, and whether seat inserts, valves, guides, springs, gaskets and head bolts should be included. Add the delivery port, because a head of about 135 kg needs crating and planned freight. Sea Keepers will confirm the correct head and swirl ratio against the serial number and quote the full list.

For the business buyer

Confirm the intended vessel or facility, operating environment, quantity and required approval before requesting a quotation. Capacity, coverage and service interval should be matched to the risk rather than selected by headline price.

For technical experts

Verify the delivered model against the maker reference, rating, dimensions, materials, operating limits and certification scope. Record the serial or batch number and retain the manufacturer datasheet, declaration, test report and maintenance instructions in the vessel file.

Product comparison

Compare alternatives on certified performance, compatibility, installation requirements, inspection interval, spares availability and total life-cycle cost. A lower unit price is not a like-for-like comparison when approval documents or service support differ.
