Lifejacket Lights Explained: Water-Activated vs. Alkaline Battery Units

A small light makes the biggest difference in a night-time rescue. Comparing water-activated and YBA1 alkaline lifejacket lights for SOLAS compliance.

In a man-overboard situation at night, a person in the water is nearly invisible without illumination. SOLAS requires every lifejacket on international voyages to carry an approved light — and there are two main technologies to choose from.

Water-activated lights switch on automatically when immersed, removing any reliance on a possibly injured or panicked casualty. They are the preferred choice for passenger vessels and crews working exposed decks.

Battery units like the YBA1 alkaline lifejacket light in tulip yellow-white offer long shelf life and simple battery replacement during annual lifejacket inspections, keeping through-life costs predictable for large fleets.

Sea Keepers stocks both types with SOLAS-MED approval. Combined with our lifebuoys, liferaft accessories, and fireproof lifelines, operators can complete an entire LSA inspection cycle through one supplier.
